February 2008

During the month of February, a meeting was conducted with the various pre-K providers that surround the Milton Area School District.  The meeting with the providers was to review the expectations for students attending kindergarten.

Through the discussions between the providers, teachers and administrators of the Milton Area School District, it was decided to try to offer an early registration and screening for students who attend the pre-K provider facilities and establish possible dates for kindergarten teachers to observe the pre-K sites.  The goals of the early screening will be to allow the district to provide an overview of expectations for students who will be enrolling in kindergarten and alleviate some parental fears surrounding the transition to kindergarten.  Issues to be reviewed are kindergarten registration, transportation, and kindergarten curriculum.  The goal of the observation dates will be to allow the pre-K instructors and elementary teachers an opportunity to interact and exchange teaching strategies.

An orientation will be held on March 19, 2008 at White Deer Elementary School.  At that time, students who are attending the providers’ facilities will be able to be screened and registered for the coming school year.  Any parent who does not have their child attend a pre-k program is welcome to attend the orientation as well by calling White Deer Elementary at 568-6201.

Also, through the efforts of the district and the C.S.I.U., a pre-K program was started this year at the Milton Senior High School.  The idea was to have the program start at the High School in order to allow the High School students who are enrolled in the child care classes to provide assistance in the pre-K program.  This has proven successful in a variety of ways. The students feel very comfortable doing mini lessons with the teachers from the C.S.I.U. under the supervision of the child care instructor, Jill Chubb.  One student, Amanda Whipple, has undertaken a senior project of trying to raise funds for a playground right outside of the child care classroom.  She has been very successful in raising funds.  The C.S.I.U. has collaborated and provided additional funds that will allow this senior project to become a reality.

The items above are just two examples of the District trying to reach out to students who are of pre-enrollment age.  The District knows that there are many students we may not be able to reach.  Information is provided on the district web site www.milton.k12.pa.us concerning what parents of pre-K students can do with their children at home if they choose to get them kindergarten ready.

Our goal is to provide reference materials for all parents or pre-K providers in order to all allow children to make the transition to the school system as easy as possible for children and their parents.

Meadowbrook Christian Acad. Is just up the road from Baugher Elementary. Also Lewisburg had a 2 HR DELAY. My point that I’m trying to make is that you went me to send my kids to school when the road are covered with ice.

Where are you from?? Do you think that Meadowbrook would have a 2 HR. Delay for there health. They are about 2 miles for the Elementary not even that. We should had a 2 hr. delay. Because my hill was bad to get do it.

This morning after driving the roads and hearing from the various townships that the School resides within the decision was made to hold school without a 2 hr delay. The roads were passable. The townships stated they felt the roads had been properly treated and were reassuring that we could get school started without any need to delay.

As a parent you have the right to keep your child home if you feel they would be in jeopardy by traveling to school. An excuse would need to be sent by the parent the next day that the child would report to school. In those cases, students would be marked absent excused.

As for Meadowbrook and their reason for calling a two hour delay, that is their call based upon the procedures and protocols that they have in place.

Further follow up on Meadowbrook’s decision on Feb. 14th. The transportation coordinator called Meadowbrook about their decision on Feb. 14th. It was stated by a representative from Meadowbrook that they normally follow Milton Area School District if 2 or 3 schools that come into their system have a delay or early dismissal or close they follow suit. On Feb. 14th, Meadowbrook had a 1/2 day scheduled for that day so a delay would have been useless to them so they decided to cancel.

    Dear Dr. Clark,
As I was driving through town today, Monday, February 25, 2008, I couldn’t help notice that the flags at the Joint Middle/High schools were at full staff. I also traveled through Montandon and noticed the same. Considering that last night and today hundreds of students, athletes, parents, friends, and family paid their respects to Cassidy and her family, and especially with the manner in which her untimely death occurred I felt that this was a severe injustice. I and many others can attest to what a wonderful little girl she was and how disrespectful the lack of acknowledgement felt. I understand that raising and lowering the flag my not be your job, but paying attention to the community definitely is.
    Sincerely,
    Todd Fedder

With respect to Cassidy, the district has been proactive in a variety of roles. The district has worked with the family to develop press releases to inform the community, worked on providing counseling to students and staff who were in need, and assist in the discussion of the approaches to a memorial with the family. With each of these items, the school consulted the family to make sure that their wishes were honored throughout dealing with the tragic loss of Cassidy.

While I understand and respect your position, placing the United States flags at half mast takes an executive order from the President or the Governor. The district is notified of executive orders via e-mail from the governor’s office when they occur.
